Purpose and scope
What this page is for
This Product Description Standards page explains the rules we hold ourselves to when writing, pricing, and illustrating every listing across our website — sofas, chairs, tables, home accessories, the Harlequin Patchwork Collection, leathers, beanbags, footstools, and storage boxes. It exists so that shoppers, comparison platforms, and regulators can see exactly how we build a listing, before they ever click "buy."
Who it applies to
These standards apply to every product listing published by SLW Chesterfields, operated by Harlequin Chesterfield Sofa Ltd, whether the item is sold individually to a consumer or supplied to a hotel, bar, pub, or restaurant under a trade arrangement. Every member of our team who writes, edits, or approves a listing works to this standard.
Every piece we sell is hand-built at our workshop in Bury, Greater Manchester, and shipped exclusively to addresses within the United Kingdom. Because so much of our range is made or finished to order, we take particular care to describe, at the point of listing, exactly what is fixed, what is customisable, and what a buyer should expect to receive — with nothing left to assumption.
Our commitment to accuracy
Every description on our website is written to reflect the item as it is actually made, priced, and available — not as we wish it to appear. This is the foundation every other section on this page builds on.
Complete, not partial

Free of guesswork
RequiredWe do not publish a listing until we know its true specification. If a detail is genuinely variable — such as natural leather grain — we say so rather than state a false precision.
Our test for every listing: if a customer receives the item and compares it to the product page, every material claim, dimension, and price should match. If it wouldn't, we don't publish it that way.
Titles and categorisation
Our product names — Cambridgeshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Cheshire, Derbyshire, Gloucestershire and others — are collection names, not descriptions in themselves. Each listing title and category placement follows the rules below.
What a title must contain
- The product type in plain terms (for example, "Chesterfield Sofa," "Wing-Back Armchair," "Round Occasional Table")
- The collection or model name we use internally
- Where relevant to the item, the seat configuration (for example, two-seater, three-seater, or corner)
What a title must not contain
- Unrelated keywords added only to widen search visibility
- Superlatives that cannot be substantiated, such as "best" or "cheapest," used as fact rather than opinion
- Symbols, emojis, or promotional text such as "SALE" or "FREE" inside the product title itself
Each item is placed in the category that most accurately reflects its type and use — Sofas, Chairs, Tables, Home Accessories, Patchwork, or Leathers — and, within Home Accessories, correctly sub-classified as a beanbag, footstool, or storage box. We do not list an item in a higher-value or unrelated category to increase its visibility.
Materials and craftsmanship
Because every SLW Chesterfields piece is hand-built with real leather, hardwood frames, and traditional deep-buttoning and stitching techniques, we describe the construction of every item in terms a buyer can actually verify.
Frame and construction
We state the frame material (such as kiln-dried hardwood), the suspension or seating method used, and the general construction style — for example, deep-buttoned, chesterfield-rolled arm, or panel-stitched.
Upholstery material
We state clearly whether an item is upholstered in genuine leather, and identify the leather range it belongs to (Vintage, Pastel, Old English, or Antique). We do not describe a faux, bonded, or leather-look material as "leather" without that distinction being explicit.
Fillings and interiors
For beanbags, footstools, and cushioned pieces, we state the filling type used (such as foam, fibre, or bead fill) so buyers understand comfort, weight, and maintenance before ordering.
Wood, metal and hardware: where a table, footstool, or storage box includes a visible wood species, metal finish, or hardware type (such as brass castors or a hinged lid), that detail is named specifically rather than described only as "premium" or "quality" materials.
Dimensions and capacity
Furniture is a considered purchase, and getting the size wrong is costly for a customer to fix. Every listing therefore includes measurements a buyer can use to plan their space before ordering.
Measurements provided
Height, width, depth, and seat height are given in metric units (centimetres), in line with UK trading standards requirements for the sale of goods. Where helpful, we also note an imperial approximation.
Seating and load capacity
Where relevant, we state seating capacity (for example, two-seater or three-seater) and note any maximum recommended weight for footstools or occasional tables used as extra seating.
Because bespoke and Patchwork pieces can be built to a custom size on request, any listed dimension for those items reflects our standard build unless a customer has specifically agreed a different size with us in writing, per Section 08.
Pricing and availability
The price shown on a product page is the price you pay for that specification, and the availability shown reflects our genuine build and dispatch position at the time.

No false urgency: we do not display fabricated stock countdowns, invented "X people are viewing this" messages, or limited-time pricing that is not genuinely limited. Any sale or reduced price reflects a real, time-bound change from our standard price.
Images and visual accuracy
Furniture is bought largely by eye. Our imagery is held to the same standard of accuracy as our written descriptions.
What our images show
Product photography and rendered images show the actual item, leather range, and colour combination available for that listing — not an unrelated or aspirational example — and at least one image reflects the item's true proportions and setting.
What our images do not do
We do not add promotional text, price banners, borders, watermarks, or badges over product photography, and we do not use an image that materially misrepresents colour, scale, or finish. Leather tone can vary slightly by screen; where this matters, we say so in the description.
Concept and reference imagery
Where a category page uses a styled or concept image (for example, a hospitality setting shown on our bar, pub, and restaurant page) rather than a photograph of a specific stocked item, this is presented as inspiration for bespoke commissions, not as a literal in-stock product.
Leather and colour swatches
Each leather range page shows genuine swatch photography of that leather, so a customer selecting a custom colour or Patchwork panel combination can see an honest representation of texture and tone before ordering.
Bespoke and Patchwork disclosure
The Harlequin Patchwork Collection and any custom-leather order are made to a customer's specification. Every listing in this category discloses that clearly, in line with our Cancellation Policy.
Made-to-order labelling
BespokeEvery Patchwork listing, and every product page offering a custom leather colour or panel combination, states plainly on the product page and at checkout that the item is made to order, and that the standard 14-day change-of-mind cancellation right does not apply once production has begun.
Realistic lead times
RequiredBecause a bespoke piece is hand-built after you order, we state a realistic production and delivery lead time on the listing rather than implying next-day or stock-item availability for an item that is, in fact, made to order.
Any panel colours, patchwork arrangements, or finishes shown on a Patchwork product page are representative of what we can build, using the leathers described in Section 09. Where a specific combination shown is a one-off sample rather than a repeatable standard option, we say so.
Leather range standards
We sell four distinct leather ranges — Vintage, Pastel, Old English, and Antique — each with a different look, feel, and character. Listings describe which range an item uses and what makes that range distinctive.
Vintage
Crack-wax finished leather with a distressed, characterful surface. Natural variation in grain and tone is expected and disclosed, not treated as a defect.
Pastel
Softer, brighter leather tones. Listings using Pastel leather name the specific colourway shown.
Old English
A traditional, premium leather finish. Where this range costs more than others, that is reflected transparently in the listed price.
Antique
A rub-off, aged-look leather. We describe this as an intentional aesthetic effect rather than implying the leather itself is aged or reclaimed unless it genuinely is.
Natural material disclosure: as with any genuine leather product, small variations in grain, marking, and tone occur naturally and are part of the material, not a manufacturing fault. Every leather and Patchwork listing makes this clear so expectations are set correctly before purchase.
Prohibited content and claims
To keep every listing trustworthy and compliant, the following are never used on any SLW Chesterfields product page, regardless of category.
Unsubstantiated or absolute claims
We do not use claims such as "guaranteed for life," "indestructible," or "the UK's best sofa" unless we can demonstrate the claim is true and can stand behind it in writing.
Misleading comparisons and fake discounts
We do not invent a higher "was" price to inflate an apparent discount, and we do not compare our products to a named competitor's products in a way that cannot be substantiated.
Counterfeit or unauthorised branding
We only use our own registered trading name, SLW Chesterfields, and our own collection and model names. We do not use a third-party brand name, trademark, or logo we are not authorised to use.
Health, safety, or regulatory claims we cannot support
We do not describe an item as "fire safe," "hypoallergenic," or "medically approved" unless that claim is backed by a genuine, current certification we hold and can provide on request.
Manipulated reviews or testimonials
Any customer feedback we display is genuine and unedited in substance. We do not fabricate reviews, ratings, or "verified buyer" badges.
UK fire safety and labelling
All of our upholstered furniture — sofas, chairs, footstools, and beanbags — is manufactured to comply with the Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988, as amended in 1989, 1993 and 2010.
Permanent fire-safety labelling
Every upholstered item we deliver carries a permanent label confirming that the filling materials meet the ignitability requirements of the Regulations, fixed to the item itself rather than shown only on packaging that may be discarded.
Display labelling before purchase
Where required, a display label is also attached at the point of sale so that fire-resistance information is available to a customer before they buy, not only after delivery.
This applies to our full range of upholstered seating, including bespoke Patchwork pieces and custom-leather orders. Compliance is not affected by a customer's choice of leather colour, panel combination, or stitching style.
Consumer protection law we follow
Beyond fire safety, our listings and business practices are built around the following UK legal frameworks.
Consumer Rights Act 2015
Goods must be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose, and match their description. Our listing standards exist specifically to make sure the "as described" requirement is met before an item ever leaves our workshop.
Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013
Sets out the pre-contract information we must give you, including total price, delivery arrangements, and cancellation rights. Full detail is set out in our Cancellation Policy.
Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008
Prohibits misleading actions and omissions in how goods are marketed. Our accuracy standards in Sections 02 to 07 are designed to prevent both.
Price Marking Order 2004 & VAT rules
Prices shown to consumers are inclusive of VAT where applicable, and we do not add undisclosed charges between the listed price and the price charged at checkout.
Trade and hospitality listings
We supply hotels, bars, pubs, and restaurants with bespoke banquette seating and fitted leather furniture. These listings and enquiry pages follow the same accuracy standards as our consumer range, with two additional points.
Concept imagery, clearly labelled
Where hospitality pages use styled or concept imagery to illustrate what a bespoke installation could look like, this is presented as inspiration for a custom commission rather than a photograph of a specific in-stock product.
Individually quoted pricing
Because trade and hospitality projects are typically made-to-measure and installed on-site, final pricing is confirmed in a written quotation rather than displayed as a fixed listing price, and this is stated clearly on the relevant page.
Review, accountability, and updates
Checked before publishing
Every new listing is checked against this page before it goes live.
Reviewed periodically
Existing listings are reviewed for continued accuracy as materials, pricing, or lead times change.
Corrected on report
If a customer flags an inaccurate listing, we investigate and correct it promptly.
We review this Product Description Standards page periodically to keep it aligned with current UK consumer law and our own product range. When we make a material change, we update the "Last updated" date at the bottom of this page.
