SLW Chesterfields — Cancellation Policy

Your right to cancel, explained simply.

Operated by Harlequin Chesterfield Sofa Ltd, SLW Chesterfields hand-builds and sells leather sofas, chairs, tables, home accessories, patchwork furniture, leathers, beanbags, footstools, and storage boxes. This page sets out exactly when you can cancel an order, how bespoke and made-to-order pieces are treated differently, and how refunds are handled — in full, before you buy.

Who this policy covers

Every order placed with us

This policy applies whenever you purchase from SLW Chesterfields, whether through our website, over the phone, or by email — including sofas, chairs, tables, home accessories, patchwork pieces, leathers, beanbags, footstools, and storage boxes. It applies equally regardless of which product page you ordered from.

Consumers and trade buyers, treated fairly

Most of our customers are individual consumers, and the statutory cancellation rights explained below apply to you in full. We also supply hotels, bars, pubs, and restaurants; Section 07 explains how commercial orders are handled, since statutory consumer cancellation rights are legally reserved for individual consumers, not businesses.

SLW Chesterfields is owned and operated by Harlequin Chesterfield Sofa Ltd, registered in England and Wales (Company No. 15921383). We craft each piece at our workshop in Bury, Greater Manchester, and currently ship exclusively to addresses within the United Kingdom. Every cancellation, return, and refund right described on this page is provided in addition to, and does not reduce, your statutory rights under UK consumer law.

Section 02

Your 14-day right to cancel

Under the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013, if you buy a standard, ready-made item from us online, by phone, or by email, you have the right to cancel your order without giving a reason.

The cancellation window

Standard items

You have 14 calendar days from the day after you (or a person you've nominated) receive the goods to change your mind and cancel, with no reason required.

Cancelling before delivery

Standard items

You can also cancel at any point after you place your order and before it's delivered — simply contact us and we will stop dispatch and confirm your refund.

No reason needed

Standard items

This is a genuine "change of mind" right. You don't need to explain why, and it doesn't affect any additional rights you have if an item later turns out to be faulty.

Important: the 14-day cancellation right above applies to standard, ready-made stock items. Because many SLW Chesterfields pieces — including every Patchwork Collection sofa and any item ordered in a custom leather colour or combination — are built to your specification, they are treated differently under the law. Section 03 explains exactly how.

Section 03

Bespoke and made-to-order items

Regulation 28(1)(b) of the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 excludes goods "made to the consumer's specifications or clearly personalised" from the standard 14-day cancellation right. Here is exactly what that means for SLW Chesterfields orders.

What counts as bespoke

Made-to-order

Any Harlequin Patchwork Collection piece, and any sofa, chair, or footstool where you've chosen a specific leather colour, leather type, stitching, or panel combination for us to hand-build, is made to your specification. Because production begins specifically for your order, these items fall outside the statutory 14-day cancellation right once work has started.

What counts as standard stock

Ready-made

Home accessories, storage boxes, footstools, and beanbags sold in fixed, pre-set colours as shown on the product page — with no custom specification submitted by you — are standard stock items and carry the full 14-day cancellation right described in Section 02.

Because we want this policy to be genuinely useful to you before you order, not just after: if you're unsure whether a piece you're considering counts as bespoke, ask us before checkout at slwchesterfields@icloud.com or +44 07947 700380, and we'll confirm in writing. We will always tell you clearly on the product page and at checkout when an item is made to order.

You can still cancel before production begins. Even on a bespoke order, you may cancel free of charge for a short window after placing your order, before we begin cutting leather or building your piece. Once production has started, cancellation may only be accepted at our discretion and may involve a charge to cover materials and labour already committed — we will always confirm the position with you individually rather than apply a blanket rule.

Section 04

How to cancel an order

Cancelling is straightforward. Contact us using any of the methods below and include your order reference and delivery details.

By phone

+44 07947 700380

In writing

169 Tottington Road, Bolton, England, BL2 4DF

Once we receive your cancellation, we will confirm it in writing by email within 2 business days, along with the next steps for return and refund if your order has already been dispatched.

Section 05

Returning goods after cancellation

If your order hasn't shipped

We simply cancel production or dispatch and confirm your refund — there is nothing further for you to do.

If your order has already arrived

You must return the item to us without undue delay, and in any event within 14 days of telling us you wish to cancel. Given the size of most SLW Chesterfields furniture, we will arrange a collection with you directly rather than ask you to ship it yourself.

Care of the goods

You're entitled to handle and inspect the item as you would in a shop, but you are responsible for any diminished value resulting from unnecessary handling beyond that. Please keep leather items away from sharp objects and direct heat while awaiting collection.

Return collection costs

Unless the item is faulty or was not as described, you are responsible for the direct cost of returning goods. For large furniture, we will quote this cost clearly before arranging collection so there are no surprises.

Section 06

Refunds — timing and method

SituationWhen you'll be refundedMethod
Cancelled before dispatchWithin 14 days of your cancellation requestOriginal payment method
Cancelled, goods not yet returnedWithin 14 days of cancellation, or of receiving evidence you've sent the goods back — whichever is earlierOriginal payment method
Cancelled, goods already returned or collectedWithin 14 days of us receiving the goods backOriginal payment method
Faulty or not as describedWithin 14 days of us confirming the fault, per Section 08Original payment method, including any standard delivery charge you paid

Deductions: if the value of the item has been reduced by handling beyond what's needed to inspect it, we may deduct a fair amount from your refund to reflect that reduction in value. We will always explain any deduction clearly, in writing, before finalising your refund.

Section 07

Trade and hospitality orders

We regularly supply hotels, bars, pubs, and restaurants with bespoke banquette seating and fitted leather furniture. Because statutory consumer cancellation rights under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 apply only to individuals acting outside a trade, business, craft, or profession, commercial orders are handled under separate, individually agreed terms.

Individually agreed terms

Cancellation windows, deposit requirements, and any cancellation charges for trade and hospitality projects are set out in writing in your quotation or order confirmation before you commit, since these projects are typically bespoke, made-to-measure, and installed on-site.

Consistent protection either way

Even though statutory consumer cancellation rights don't apply to business purchases, we apply the same standard of clear communication, fair dealing, and written confirmation to every trade order that we apply to consumer orders.

Section 08

Faulty or not-as-described goods

Your rights here are separate from, and broader than, the 14-day change-of-mind right — and they apply to bespoke and made-to-order pieces as well as standard stock.

First 30 days

Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, if an item is faulty, not of satisfactory quality, or not as described, you have a short-term right to reject it for a full refund within the first 30 days of delivery.

After 30 days

You're entitled to a repair or replacement. If that isn't possible, doesn't work, or isn't provided within a reasonable time, you can request a price reduction or a full refund.

Bespoke pieces included

The materials-exemption in Section 03 covers change-of-mind cancellation only. It does not remove your right to a repair, replacement, or refund if a Patchwork or custom-leather piece arrives faulty or is not what you specified.

Section 09

Where cancellation rights don't apply

01

Bespoke and personalised items, once production has begun

As explained in Section 03, Patchwork Collection pieces and any custom leather-specification order are exempt from the standard 14-day change-of-mind right once we've started building them, under Regulation 28(1)(b) of the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013.

02

Goods that have been used beyond reasonable inspection

If an item has been assembled, installed, or used in a way that goes beyond handling it as you would in a showroom, we may deduct an amount reflecting the reduction in its value from your refund.

03

Business-to-business trade contracts

As explained in Section 07, statutory consumer cancellation rights apply to individuals, not to purchases made by a business, trade, craft, or profession. Trade orders follow the individually agreed terms in your written quotation.

Section 10

How we update this policy

We review this Cancellation Policy periodically to keep it accurate and aligned with current UK consumer law. When we make a material change, we update the "Last updated" date at the bottom of this page. The version in force at the time you place an order is the version that applies to that order.
