SLW Chesterfields wants every visitor — however they browse the web — to be able to explore our sofas, chairs, tables and leathers, and to reach a real person if something on the page gets in the way.
Tell us about an access barrierChoosing a Chesterfield, a set of dining chairs, or the right leather for a footstool is a considered, often visual decision. We want that experience to be genuinely usable for visitors who navigate by keyboard, who use a screen reader, who need larger text or stronger colour contrast, or who simply find it easier to speak to a person on the phone.
This statement sets out what we aim for, what we've done so far, and where we know the site still falls short. We would rather tell you plainly than claim a level of accessibility we haven't yet reached — and we actively want to hear from you if something doesn't work.
This statement applies to the whole of slwchesterfields.com, including every product range we sell:
Sofas & Chesterfields
Chairs — armchairs, classic, high back & office
Tables — circular, rectangular & square
Home Accessories, Beanbags, Footstools & Storage Boxes
Patchwork chairs, Chesterfields, beanbags & footstools
Leathers — vintage, pastel, Old English & antique ranges
Leather animals and decorative pieces
Enquiry & contact pages, including size, sample and trade requests
We use the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA, the internationally recognised benchmark, as our working target for text, colour, navigation and interaction on this site. It is the same standard referenced in UK public sector accessibility law and widely adopted as best practice across UK retail.
SLW Chesterfields is a small, family-run business rather than a public sector body, so WCAG conformance is not a strict legal requirement for us in the way it is for government websites. We follow it anyway, because it is the clearest, most practical way to make sure our website works for the widest range of customers.
| Legislation | What it means for us |
|---|---|
| Equality Act 2010 | As a provider of goods and services in England and Wales, we have a duty to make reasonable adjustments so that disabled customers are not put at a substantial disadvantage compared with other customers when using our website or buying from us. |
| Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) Accessibility Regulations 2018 | These Regulations set a strict WCAG 2.1 AA duty for public sector websites. They do not legally bind a private retailer like SLW Chesterfields, but we treat the same WCAG 2.1 AA standard as our own voluntary benchmark. |
| Consumer Rights Act 2015 & Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 | These give every customer, disabled or not, the right to clear pre-contract information and fair treatment when buying online — which is part of why we offer plain-language product pages and multiple ways to ask a question before you buy. |
| UK GDPR & Data Protection Act 2018 | Where you contact us to request information in an alternative format or to report an accessibility issue, we handle your details in line with our Privacy Policy. |
Every sofa, chair, table and accessory is reachable through a clear text link or heading, such as the product name shown under each image, rather than through an image alone — so the catalogue can be followed by a screen reader as well as by sight.
Where a product comes in more than one leather or colourway, each option is identified by its name (for example, "Old English" or "Antique") in the product title or description, not by colour swatches alone.
Our navigation is organised into the same product categories throughout the site — Sofa's, Chair's, Home Accessories, Patchwork's, Leathers, Animals and Tables — so the structure stays predictable whichever page you land on, including when navigating by keyboard.
Our Terms & Conditions, Returns & Refunds, Cancellation, Payment and Privacy pages are written in plain English wherever the underlying law allows, avoiding unnecessary legal jargon so they can be understood on a first read.
Text on the site is built to resize using your browser's normal zoom and text-size controls, and the layout reflows for smaller screens and browser windows rather than relying on a fixed layout.
Every page carries our phone number and email address, so if a page is ever hard to use, you are never more than a call or an email away from someone who can complete your order or answer a question for you directly.
We would rather be candid about where the site currently falls short of full WCAG 2.1 AA conformance than leave you to discover it. We are actively working through the list below.
Our furniture is visual by nature, and many product and category pages lean heavily on photography. We are working through our image library to ensure every photo carries meaningful descriptive text (alt text) rather than a filename or blank description.
A number of individual product pages currently show a name, price and image with little supporting written description. We are gradually adding fuller text descriptions — covering dimensions, leather options and construction — to reduce reliance on images alone.
Links to our Facebook and Instagram pages take you to platforms we do not build or control, and their accessibility is governed by their own statements, not this one.
We keep our policies as web pages rather than PDFs wherever possible, specifically so their content stays resizable, searchable and readable by assistive technology rather than locked inside a scanned or image-based document.
If any part of the website is difficult for you to use, every one of these routes reaches the same team and can complete the same order.
Describe what you're looking for by phone — including sizes, leathers or a specific product you've seen — and we can talk it through and take your order verbally.

Our enquiry page is split by topic — patchwork, sizes and styles, leather samples, and hotel/bar/pub/restaurant orders — so you can describe exactly what you need in your own words, or attach a screenshot, rather than relying on menus alone.
If you need any product details, our Terms & Conditions, or another page on this site in a different format — for example as plain text by email, in a larger print size, or read aloud to you over the phone — please get in touch at slwchesterfields@icloud.com or 07947 700380. We will do our best to respond within a few working days and to find a format that works for you.
Assistive technology varies widely between browsers, devices and versions, so we cannot guarantee every combination will work perfectly. If you find that a particular screen reader, browser or device causes a problem on this site, please tell us the details in Section 10 below — this is genuinely the fastest way for us to fix it.
We want to know if any page, image, form or product link is hard to use with your browser, device or assistive technology.
Email slwchesterfields@icloud.com with the subject "Accessibility", or call 07947 700380, Monday–Friday, 09:00–18:00 (GMT). We aim to acknowledge accessibility reports within a few working days.
We hope to resolve any accessibility concern directly and quickly through the contact routes above. If you feel we have not done so, and you believe you have been treated unfairly under the Equality Act 2010, the Equality Advisory and Support Service (EASS) offers free, independent advice to consumers in England, Scotland and Wales on their rights around disability discrimination and reasonable adjustments.
Please note that the formal Public Sector Bodies Accessibility Regulations enforcement route, overseen by the Equality and Human Rights Commission, applies to public sector websites and does not extend to a private retailer such as SLW Chesterfields; the EASS route above is the relevant one for a consumer service like ours.
We review this statement whenever we make a significant change to the website, and at least once a year, to check it still reflects how the site actually works. The effective date at the top of this page shows when it was last reviewed or updated. Where we identify a new limitation, we will add it here rather than remove it quietly.
Whether it's a barrier on the website or a question about a product, these routes reach the same small team.
